Association

Membership

We warmly welcome new members who are interested in the activities of the association. Membership requires completion of Reserve Officer training (Medical Reserve Officer Course or Reserve Officer Course) and an interest in field medicine. If you do not meet the formal membership requirements but are interested in the association’s activities, you may apply for supporting membership. Supporting membership differs only minimally from full membership.

The Reserve Medical Officers Association of Finland operates as a local association of the Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation under the Helsinki Reserve Officers’ District. The annual membership fee is EUR 37 and is collected by the Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation. Applications for membership are submitted centrally through the Federation. A direct link to our membership application is provided below. Additional information can be requested from the association’s secretary if needed.

Training day

The Reserve Medical Officers Association of Finland organizes military medical training for its members and for others interested in the subject in the form of training days. The first training day was held in 2014 at the Upinniemi Garrison, and the event has since become an established annual part of the association’s activities. The popularity of the training days has grown steadily, and they have also attracted wider interest among healthcare professionals.

The content of the training days is based on current and societally significant themes. Leading experts in their respective fields are invited as speakers, and the medical standard of the training has been consistently high. The program is interdisciplinary: in addition to medicine, topics include crisis resilience, preparedness for exceptional circumstances, and operations in demanding field conditions.

The 2025 training day will focus on aviation medicine and related topical themes. The program will cover, among other topics, the fundamentals of aviation medicine, the demands of a fighter pilot’s profession, and new dimensions of modern warfare such as unmanned systems. The training day offers a timely and comprehensive overview of the intersection between aviation, medicine, and the security environment.

The Knight Brofeldt Award

Mannerheim Cross Knight Simo Brofeldt (1892–1942) was a Finnish medical colonel, surgeon, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Helsinki. He played a key role in the development of Finland’s military medical services, particularly during the Winter War and the Continuation War. Brofeldt made significant contributions both in academia and in society, and he was among those involved in establishing the Red Cross Hospital in Helsinki.

During the war years, Brofeldt was a central figure in organizing military medical care under demanding and rapidly changing conditions. His contribution was decisive in ensuring the treatment and evacuation of the wounded in situations where normal lines of communication were unavailable. Brofeldt was the only medical officer to be awarded the Mannerheim Cross, in recognition of his exceptional service to military medicine.

The Reserve Medical Officers Association of Finland honors the memory of Simo Brofeldt by awarding the Knight Brofeldt Award. The award is presented annually to one or two particularly meritorious medical officers, with the aim of preserving Brofeldt’s legacy and highlighting the importance of military medical expertise.
